The day Lillian learned to drive was a day the rest of the residents of Buckingham Hill would remember forever.
Not because Lillian was so unusually astute she picked up the skill at a speed that earned their awe and respect, or indeed that they felt any particular interest or emotional investment in the activity at all, though the sight of an octogenarian behind the wheel of a Fiat Punto bearing L plates was certainly an unusual sight.
No, in fact the opposite would be the case. For the truth of the
matter is that Lillian had only just taken off the handbrake outside her house
when the Punto careered down the incline of her front garden and smashed into
her garage. Thus it was that Lillian would remain forever in the minds of the people
who lived alongside her as the first person in the country to right off a dual-control
instruction vehicle without even getting off the drive.
