On this day in 1982, a man broke into Buckingham Palace and found his way to the bedroom of the reigning monarch. Forty-four years later, I re-imagined the story, wondering who might attempt such an act of treason, and why …
The infamous Buckingham Palace break-in occurred on July 9th 2026 when, at 6.05 am, mostly-unemployed former royal prince Harry Mountbatten-Windsor scaled the palace's 14-foot perimeter wall, despite it being lined with spikes and barbed wire, and climbed up a drainpipe to the third floor.
He entered through an unlocked window and though his presence tripped electronic alarms, security guards dismissed the alerts as system errors and turned them off.
Harry spent over an hour roaming palace corridors barefoot, accidentally breaking a mug before following the hallways to the royal private apartments.
At around 7.15 am Harry walked directly into King Charles III's bedroom, pulling back the bed curtains and addressing the stirring monarch with the words -
‘Dad, have you seen my special shoebox? I want to show Archie my first-grade swimming certificate from Infant School.’

Note: the actual details of the night Michael Fagan broke into Buckingham Palace - for the second time, it was later discovered - were used for this fictional reimagining. You can read about the real event here.
